Entry Requirements
Countries that require a Yellow Fever certificate
Over 40 countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination as a condition of entry. Requirements can also apply if you are transiting through an endemic country, even without leaving the airport. Your pharmacist will check your full itinerary at your appointment.
Sub-Saharan Africa
South & Central America
This list is indicative. Entry requirements change. Always confirm with the official entry requirements for your specific destination and travel route, including transit countries. Our pharmacists check the latest guidance at your appointment.
Travelling to Africa or South America?
Yellow Fever vaccination is recommended or required for many destinations in these regions. Check the specific guide for your country.
When to book your appointment
4–6 weeks before departure
Standard advice for Yellow Fever and companion vaccines. Allows time for the 10-day rule and any vaccine spacing requirements.
Certificate must be 10 days old
Many countries require the ICVP to be at least 10 days old on the date of entry. Vaccinating the day before you fly will not produce a valid certificate in time.
Travelling imminently?
Call us on 01634 575805 — same-day appointments are usually available. We can advise on what is achievable at short notice. See also our last-minute vaccinations guide.
What to bring to your appointment
- Your travel itinerary — all countries and any transit stops
- Passport — your name and number must match the ICVP exactly
- Previous vaccination records — NHS yellow card, old ICVP, GP records
- Details of any relevant medical conditions, medications, or allergies
If you have had Yellow Fever vaccine before and have your old ICVP, bring it — it may still be valid even if it shows a 10-year expiry date.
Who cannot have the Yellow Fever vaccine?
Yellow Fever is a live attenuated vaccine, which means it is not suitable for everyone. Your pharmacist will assess suitability at your appointment. Do not assume — always disclose your full medical history.
Infants under 9 months
Higher risk of serious adverse effects in very young children
Immunocompromised individuals
Including chemotherapy patients, those on immunosuppressants, HIV with low CD4 counts
Severe egg allergy
Vaccine is produced using embryonated eggs; anaphylactic allergy is usually a contraindication
Pregnancy
Generally avoided unless the exposure risk is considered high; assessed individually
Age over 60 (first-time recipients)
Marginally higher risk of vaccine-associated viscerotropic disease (YEL-AVD); not an absolute contraindication — discussed at consultation
If you cannot have the vaccine for medical reasons, a pharmacist at a registered YFVC can issue a medical exemption letter. This is not accepted by all countries — discuss your options before you travel.

Frequently asked questions
Where can I get the Yellow Fever vaccine in Medway?
Medway Pharmacy at 465 Canterbury Street, Gillingham, ME7 5LJ is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC) serving Gillingham, Chatham, Rochester, Strood, Rainham, and the wider Kent area. We are open 7 days a week from 7:30am to 10pm. Book online or call 01634 575805.
How much does the Yellow Fever vaccine cost in the UK?
At Medway Pharmacy the cost is £70 per person. This includes the vaccine, the pharmacist assessment, and your ICVP certificate (Yellow Card). There are no hidden charges. The Yellow Fever vaccine is not available free on the NHS.
Do I need a Yellow Fever certificate to visit my destination?
Over 40 countries require proof of Yellow Fever vaccination for entry, and requirements can also apply if you transit through an endemic country. Check our destination guides or call us — our pharmacists will review your specific itinerary and advise whether a certificate is required.
How long is the Yellow Fever certificate (ICVP) valid for?
Since June 2016 the ICVP is valid for life. A single dose of the vaccine provides lifelong protection. However, the certificate must be at least 10 days old before it is accepted at certain borders — this is why booking early matters.
What is an ICVP (Yellow Card) and what does it contain?
The International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP) is the official WHO-governed document proving you have been vaccinated against Yellow Fever. It contains your name, passport number, date of vaccination, and the stamp and signature of the registered YFVC. Only a registered YFVC like Medway Pharmacy can issue this certificate — GP letters and NHS vaccination records are not accepted by border control in most countries.
How soon before travel should I get the Yellow Fever vaccine?
Ideally 4–6 weeks before departure. The most critical timing rule: the certificate must be at least 10 days old when you arrive in countries that require it. Travelling within 10 days of vaccination means the certificate is technically valid but may not be accepted at the border. Same-day appointments are available if you are travelling imminently — call us to check availability.
Can I get the Yellow Fever vaccine if I am pregnant or immunocompromised?
The vaccine is generally not recommended in pregnancy (unless the exposure risk is considered high) and is contraindicated in severely immunocompromised individuals. Your pharmacist will assess suitability based on your specific situation. Do not self-exclude — book an appointment or call us to discuss.
I had the Yellow Fever vaccine years ago and my certificate shows a 10-year expiry. Is it still valid?
Yes. The 10-year expiry rule was abolished in June 2016. Any ICVP issued before that date showing a 10-year validity period is still considered valid under International Health Regulations. Bring your old certificate to your appointment if you have it.
Can I get a Yellow Fever exemption letter instead of the vaccine?
Yes. If you have a genuine medical contraindication, a pharmacist at a registered YFVC can issue a medical exemption letter. However, not all countries accept exemption letters, and some may refuse entry or impose quarantine. Discuss your options with our pharmacist before you travel.

You can verify our registration on the NaTHNaC YFVC locator at nathnacyfzone.org.uk.
