Health risks in Peru
Peru is one of South America's most captivating destinations, drawing travellers to Machu Picchu, the Inca Trail, the Amazon basin and Lake Titicaca. Health risks vary significantly by altitude and region — yellow fever vaccination is recommended for eastern jungle lowlands, while hepatitis A and typhoid protection is important regardless of itinerary. Malaria is also a risk in Amazonian areas. Medway Pharmacy Travel Clinic in Gillingham, Kent is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre open 7 days a week until 10pm, offering same-day appointments without a GP referral. Get expert travel health advice and all your vaccinations in one visit.
- Yellow fever — recommended for travellers to Amazon and jungle regions below 2,300m elevation; not recommended for Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu or high-altitude areas
- Malaria — present in lowland Amazonian regions including Loreto, Ucayali and Madre de Dios; no malaria risk at Machu Picchu or in Lima
- Hepatitis A and typhoid — food and waterborne illnesses present throughout Peru; vaccination recommended for all travellers
- Dengue and Zika — mosquito-borne viruses in jungle and coastal low-altitude areas; peak risk during the rainy season (November–May)
- Altitude sickness — a risk above 3,000m (e.g. Cusco, Lake Titicaca); our team can advise on acclimatisation and preventive medication

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Peru?
Peru does not require proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter the country. However, vaccination is strongly recommended if you are travelling to the Amazon lowlands, jungle lodges or any eastern region below 2,300m elevation. If you plan to visit Brazil or another South American country after Peru, many will require you to present a valid yellow fever certificate. Medway Pharmacy is an NHS-registered YFVC and can issue your certificate on the same day.
Do I need malaria tablets for Peru?
Malaria is a risk in the Peruvian Amazon and eastern jungle regions, but not in Lima, Cusco, Machu Picchu or on the Inca Trail. If your itinerary includes Loreto, Madre de Dios, Ucayali or other jungle areas, antimalarial tablets are advisable. Our travel health team at Medway Pharmacy can advise on the right option for your specific route.
How quickly can I get vaccinated before my trip to Peru?
Medway Pharmacy is open from 7:30am to 10pm, seven days a week, and offers same-day travel health consultations. Even if your trip is imminent we can vaccinate you the same day. Walk-ins welcome — no GP referral required.
Are there health risks at Machu Picchu?
Machu Picchu sits at approximately 2,400m above sea level, so yellow fever and malaria are not a concern at the site itself. The main consideration is altitude sickness on arrival in Cusco (3,400m); allowing time to acclimatise and discussing preventive medication with our travel health team is advisable. Hepatitis A and typhoid vaccinations are recommended regardless of altitude.
