Health risks in Ghana
Ghana requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for all travellers aged 9 months and over — there are no exceptions. Yellow fever transmission risk exists throughout Ghana, so both the entry requirement and the vaccination recommendation apply to every part of the country. Malaria is high risk across all of Ghana, and Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccination is strongly advised. Travellers visiting friends and relatives (VFR travellers) with Ghanaian heritage are at particular risk — previous time spent in Ghana does not provide lasting immunity to malaria, and many UK-based Ghanaians are surprised to find they need full protection. Medway Pharmacy in Gillingham, Kent is a registered YFVC — book same-day Ghana travel vaccinations with no GP referral needed.
- Malaria: high risk throughout Ghana — antimalarial tablets recommended for all travellers including those visiting family

- Meningococcal disease: Ghana is in the extended meningitis belt — vaccination considered for longer stays and those in close contact with local people
Do I need malaria tablets for Ghana?
High malaria risk throughout Ghana with no low-risk areas — this includes Accra and all other urban and rural destinations. Plasmodium falciparum predominates. VFR travellers are at particular risk as partial immunity wanes rapidly after moving to the UK.
Typically recommended: Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine recommended. Medway Pharmacy can prescribe and dispense all antimalarial tablets same day — from £2.50 per tablet, no GP referral needed.

Where can I get a yellow fever certificate for Ghana in Kent?

We vaccinate and issue the official ICVP Yellow Card — required for all travellers aged 9 months and over entering Ghana — on the same day. No GP referral needed. Open 7 days a week, 7:30am to 10pm.
How much do travel vaccinations for Ghana cost?
At Medway Pharmacy, Yellow Fever is £70 (including the ICVP certificate), Hepatitis A from £55 and Typhoid from £55. Malaria tablets start at £2.50 per tablet. We are open until 10pm every day of the week — no need to wait for a GP appointment.
Do I need malaria tablets for Ghana and can I get them same day?
Yes — malaria risk is high throughout Ghana, including Accra. All travellers, including those visiting family, need malaria tablets. Medway Pharmacy can prescribe and dispense your antimalarials in one same-day appointment with no GP referral required.
How quickly can I get all my Ghana travel vaccinations?
Medway Pharmacy Travel Clinic is open approximately 100 hours per week — 7:30am to 10pm, seven days a week. You can get your Yellow Fever jab and ICVP Yellow Card, Hepatitis A, Typhoid, and malaria tablets all in a single same-day visit. Perfect if you are travelling at short notice.
Do I still need yellow fever and malaria tablets if I grew up in Ghana?
Yes — this is really important. If you grew up in Ghana but now live in the UK, your immunity to both yellow fever and malaria may have significantly reduced. Ghana requires a Yellow Fever certificate for all travellers regardless of origin, and childhood exposure does not protect you from malaria now. UK-based travellers of Ghanaian heritage are among the highest-risk groups for serious malaria when visiting. Please book a consultation at Medway Pharmacy — we will make sure you are fully protected.
What other vaccinations should I consider for Ghana beyond yellow fever?
Alongside Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and Typhoid, consider Hepatitis B, Meningococcal ACWY (especially for those visiting family or staying in close contact with local communities), and ensuring routine MMR and tetanus vaccinations are up to date. Our pharmacists will provide a personalised risk assessment at your appointment.
