Health risks in Tanzania
Tanzania — including Zanzibar and the Serengeti — is one of the most biodiverse destinations on earth, and it comes with real health preparation requirements. Yellow Fever vaccination is required for entry if travelling from a country with yellow fever transmission risk, and is strongly recommended for most visitors to national parks, border regions, and wildlife areas including the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. Malaria is a high risk across the country, including Zanzibar and coastal areas; antimalarial tablets and bite avoidance are both essential. If you're planning a safari or trek from Medway or Kent, book your travel health appointment at Medway Travel Clinic in Gillingham at least 6–8 weeks before departure.
- Malaria: high risk throughout Tanzania below 1,800m including all mainland areas and Zanzibar; no malaria risk above 1,800m
- Food and waterborne illness: Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccination recommended for all travellers
- Schistosomiasis: risk from freshwater contact in lakes and rivers including parts of Lake Victoria
- Altitude illness: significant risk for Kilimanjaro (5,895m) climbers and high-altitude trekkers
- Insect and tick-borne diseases: risk of African tick bite fever, Rift Valley fever and other vector-borne diseases in some areas
Do I need malaria tablets for Tanzania?
High malaria risk throughout Tanzania below 1,800m — this includes all safari parks, the coast, Zanzibar and the Serengeti. No malaria risk above 1,800m, but bite avoidance is still recommended. Zanzibar carries the same high-risk classification as the mainland.
Malaria risk varies significantly by region within Tanzania. A pharmacist assessment is essential before travel.
Typically recommended: Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine are recommended depending on your itinerary and health history. Medway Pharmacy can prescribe and dispense your tablets in one same-day visit — from £2.50 per tablet.

Discuss your specific itinerary with our travel health pharmacists at Medway Pharmacy — we are a registered YFVC and can issue the ICVP Yellow Card same day.
Medway Pharmacy is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC). We issue the International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis (ICVP / Yellow Card) on site. Learn more about Yellow Fever certificates →
