Health risks in Nigeria
Nigeria now requires a Yellow Fever vaccination certificate for all travellers entering or leaving the country — a recent policy change that catches many travellers by surprise. Yellow fever transmission risk is present throughout Nigeria, and vaccination is recommended for all visitors aged 9 months and over. Malaria is high risk throughout the country, including Lagos and Abuja. Hepatitis A and Typhoid protection is essential given food and water risks. UK-based travellers of Nigerian heritage visiting family must not assume past exposure provides protection — malaria immunity wanes quickly after moving to the UK, and Yellow Fever certificates are a strict entry requirement. Medway Pharmacy in Gillingham, Kent is a registered YFVC issuing Yellow Cards same day, with no GP referral needed.
- Malaria: high risk throughout Nigeria including all major cities — antimalarial tablets recommended for every traveller
- Yellow Fever: transmission risk throughout Nigeria; certificate now required for all travellers entering or leaving the country
- Food and waterborne illness: Hepatitis A and Typhoid vaccination strongly recommended
- Insect and tick-borne diseases: risk of African trypanosomiasis, Lassa fever, Rift Valley fever and Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever in some areas
- Meningococcal disease: Nigeria is in the meningitis belt — vaccination considered for those in close contact with local people
Do I need malaria tablets for Nigeria?
High malaria risk throughout Nigeria — no low-risk zones, including Lagos, Abuja and other major cities. Plasmodium falciparum is predominant. VFR travellers are at significantly elevated risk as immunity acquired during childhood in Nigeria is lost within months to years of living in the UK.
Typically recommended: Atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine recommended for all destinations within Nigeria. Medway Pharmacy prescribes and dispenses all antimalarials same day — tablets from £2.50 each, no GP referral needed.

Frequently asked questions about travel to Nigeria
Where can I get a yellow fever certificate for Nigeria in Kent?
Medway Pharmacy Travel Clinic in Gillingham, Kent is a registered Yellow Fever Vaccination Centre (YFVC). We vaccinate and issue the official ICVP Yellow Card — now required for all travellers entering or leaving Nigeria — on the same day, with no GP referral. Open 7 days a week until 10pm.
How much do travel vaccinations for Nigeria cost?
At Medway Pharmacy, Yellow Fever is £70 (including the ICVP certificate), Hepatitis A from £55 and Typhoid from £55. Malaria tablets start at £2.50 per tablet. We are open until 10pm, seven days a week — you can arrange everything without waiting weeks for a GP appointment.
Do I need malaria tablets for Nigeria and can I get them same day?
Yes — malaria risk is high throughout Nigeria. Antimalarial tablets are recommended regardless of whether you are staying in Lagos, Abuja or a rural area. Medway Pharmacy can prescribe and dispense your malaria tablets in one same-day appointment with no GP referral required.
How quickly can I get all my Nigeria travel vaccinations?
Medway Pharmacy Travel Clinic is open 7:30am to 10pm, seven days a week — approximately 100 hours per week. You can receive your Yellow Fever vaccination with ICVP Yellow Card, Hepatitis A, Typhoid and malaria tablets all in a single same-day visit, even at short notice.
Do I still need yellow fever and malaria tablets if I grew up in Nigeria?
Yes — this is critically important. Nigeria now requires a Yellow Fever certificate for all travellers regardless of origin or past vaccination history, and you must carry it. If you grew up in Nigeria but now live in the UK, your malaria immunity will have diminished significantly — UK-based Nigerian VFR travellers account for a disproportionate number of serious malaria cases each year. Please do not skip these protections. Book a consultation at Medway Pharmacy and we will ensure you are fully prepared.
What other vaccinations should I consider for a trip to Nigeria?
Beyond Yellow Fever, Hepatitis A and Typhoid, consider Hepatitis B, Meningococcal ACWY (especially for family visits and longer stays), and checking your routine MMR and tetanus are up to date. Our pharmacists at Medway Pharmacy will carry out a personalised risk assessment to cover your specific travel plans.
